A simple guide to Fascinator Hats and Hatinators and how to wear them
In the fascinating world of millinery there are many different fascinator styles and types to choose from so at Fascinators Direct we have put together a simple guide to help you buy the right fascinator for every occasion and explain how to wear a fascinator. If you want to read more on the history of fascinator hats and hatinators and their origins you can read about it here.
A fascinator is the most common type of women's hair accessory for weddings, race meetings and occasions. The hair fascinator is an adaptation of a formal ladies hat or cocktail hat which has evolved over the years but the millinery process used to make them is very similar to hat making.
So how do you wear a fascinator? Well, the main point of difference between hats and fascinators is that a fascinator is worn on the head using a hair clip, fascinator comb, headband or alice band attachment to fix the fascinator in place.
You can buy fascinators in a plethora of colours and beautiful designs, ranging from small fascinators to large fascinators and hatinators. A fascinator is frequently crafted from sinamay, crinoline or veiling fabric and adorned with pretty embellishments and trimmings including flowers, feathers and diamanté.
A hatinator tends to be larger than a hair fascinator and although they look more like a ladies wedding hat, they actually use an alice band, comb or fascinator clip to attach the headpiece to your hair so you wear them just like a fascinator.
Just like fascinators they can be purchased in lots of colours and styles and are also made from millinery fabrics and hat trimmings. The variety of colours available on the market means you can choose a hatinator to compliment your occasion outfit.
Hatinators have become a popular women's hair accessory for attendees of Ladies Day at Ascot, Aintree and other major horse racing events but are also a popular headpiece for wedding guests and the Mother of the bride or groom.
Whether it’s a wedding, cocktail party, race meeting or Royal Ascot, if a formal hat is your style accessory of choice then these glamorous occasions give you the perfect opportunity to wear a sensational headpiece which shows off your personality and style.
From wide brimmed hats, floppy hats and cloche hats to boaters, race hats and derby hats, milliners have been making ladies formal hats for hundreds of years and in these modern times the choice of styles and colour options is endless.
In our online shop you can buy wedding hats and occasion hats for Ascot in a big variety of colours and styles from the UK’s biggest and most long established millinery brands and millinery boutiques.
Pillbox Hats & Pillbox Fascinators
A pillbox hat has a distinctive shape with upright sides and a flat crown and essentially no brim. Crafted by milliners, pillbox hats are smaller than formal ladies hats and are traditionally made from wool or velvet fabric which is decorated with embellishments such as feathers and flowers.
Our women’s pillbox hats are a popular hair accessory for weddings and occasions due to their smaller size and elegant simplicity and were a favourite choice for Princess Diana. We also sell pillbox style fascinators which are similar in shape to a pillbox hat but are worn on the head using a headband or hair clip attachment to fix the pillbox fascinator in place.
Hair Flowers & Flower Hair Clips
Our hair flowers and flower hair clips are pretty floral accessories for bridesmaids and flower girls but also make a great alternative to fascinators and hats.
These small fascinator hair adornments come in an array of flower designs such as daisies, roses and orchids and simply clip into your hair. Adding a flower hair clip to your hairstyle will bestow your look with sparkle and charm.
Flower crowns or hair crowns are a beautiful hair accessory for festivals, weddings and occasions and can be worn as a stunning alternative to a fascinator or hatinator.
Our floral hair crowns are adorned with gorgeous oversized flowers or large roses which are attached to an elastic headband or hair band. For the ultimate fashionista these pretty flower hair bands are worn on the forehead giving you a boho chic style.
A floral hair garland is a flower headband which sits on the top of the head and is usually made from a wire frame which is wrapped in foliage and decorated with leaves and flowers.
With a style befitting to a greek goddess these pretty floral headdresses are a popular choice for weddings and the availability of a big choice of colours and styles makes them perfect hair accessories for bridesmaids and flower girls. A flower hair garland is also a popular women's hair accessory for festival goers.
